HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL : Weisstein’s RBI Wins for Buckley

Third baseman Jason Weisstein doubled to score David Lawson from second base in the bottom of the fifth inning Tuesday, lifting lift Buckley High to a 4-3 victory over Taft.

Lawson, who was 2 for 3 with a run batted in, singled to lead off the fifth and stole second. He also pitched a complete game, recording his second win of the year. Lawson (2-1) struck out two and walked four.

Taft led, 3-1, after two innings, but was unable to contain the Buckley offense, which had 10 hits. Buckley designated hitter Steve Kadenacy hit a two-run double in the fourth to tie the game, 3-3.

Weisstein was 2 for 3 while teammates Luka Pecel and Kevin Corbett also had two hits each for Buckley, now 3-1.

Burbank 6, Bell-Jeff 0--Pitcher Leif Christafferson fired a one-hitter and struck out 10 at Northwest Park as Burbank evened its record at 2-2.

The Bulldogs’ Frank Valdivia was 2 for 3, including a triple and two RBIs, and Mitch Ross scored three runs and had two hits.

Peter Vucurevic had the only hit for Bell-Jeff (1-1), singling with two out in the fourth inning.

Fairfax 14, Verdugo Hills 3--Designated hitter Troy Bennett led a 16-hit barrage as the Lions won the East Valley League game at Verdugo Hills.

Bennett was 4 for 5 and scored three runs as Fairfax boosted its record to 2-0. Five errors by Verdugo Hills (1-1) resulted in seven unearned runs.

Winning pitcher Rich Cimadaro went 6 innings. He struck out four, but walked three batters in the seventh inning.

Sylmar 14, Hollywood 3--Senior pitcher Biff McGahan led the Spartans to the easy win at Hollywood.

McGahan (1-0) struck out seven and didn’t issue a walk in five innings and was 3 for 5 at the plate, including two triples, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Sylmar second baseman Art Monrel was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and shortstop Isidro Rodriguez was 3 for 5.

The Spartans are 1-2 while Hollywood fell to 0-3.

Saugus 6, Royal 4--Senior John Meyers doubled off the right-field fence to drive in two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the Centurions to the non-league win.

Saugus (2-2) scored three runs in the inning, the first on a sacrifice fly by Brett Paola. Dennis Moran (1-0) was the winning pitcher. Teammate Jim Fritz doubled and singled twice.

Sean Sullivan and Joe Summers each had two hits to account for Royal’s four hits.

Faith Baptist 7, Chadwick 2--Mike Graham was 4 for 4, including a homer and a double, and piled up four RBIs as the Contenders (3-2) beat the Dolphins (0-1) in a nonleague game at Faith Baptist.

Softball

Flintridge Prep 8, Rio Hondo 5--The Rebels scored six runs in the fourth and fifth innings to win the Prep League game at Rio Hondo.

Flintridge Prep pitcher Cyndy Fukami allowed only four hits in seven innings, but her teammates made six errors. All of the Kares’ runs were unearned.

Stephanie Joseph and Denise Obrero each had two hits for Flintridge Prep (1-3).

Rio Hondo pitcher Wendy Dowd was 3 for 3 and scored a run for the Kares (1-1).

Fillmore 4, L.A. Baptist 3--The Flashes scored an unearned run in the top of the inning to win the nonleague game at Cal State Northridge.

Although she struck out seven and walked only two, Michelle Ruffner gave up 10 hits and took the loss. Ruffner was 1 for 3 with an RBI and teammate Jenny Yu was 1 for 3, including a double. The loss dropped the Knights to 1-5.

Reseda 19, Van Nuys 18--Reseda’s Sheryl Uphoff, who had seven RBIs, hit a game-winning single to left with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Reseda to the win. Uphoff was 5 for 6 with a home run, a triple and three singles.

Despi Perros went 4 for 4 as Van Nuys (0-1) collected 25 hits. Reseda (1-0) had 24 hits.
