Sacramento City College advanced to the final game of the state community college basketball tournament for the first time in the school’s history with a 103-90 win over Los Angeles Southwest Friday night at Cerritos College in Norwalk.

The Panthers took control early in the first half, scoring nine straight points to take the lead, 21-13, with 12:36 left. Sacramento maintained the lead the rest of the half and led, 50-41, at halftime.

The second half was little more than a layup contest after the Panthers opened their largest lead, 84-62, with 7:58 left on a basket by Rodney Moore who finished with 26 points.

Teammate Henry Clark also scored 26, and guard Ken Drummond had 28. Drummond was 11 of 19 from the field, 6 of 6 from the free-throw line and had a game-high 7 assists.

The Cougars mounted one last surge in the second half but could only close the gap to 10, mostly on the performance of guard Charles Webb, who scored a game-high 37 points, 21 in the second half.

The loss stopped L.A. Southwest’s 14-game winning streak and eliminated the Cougars (27-5) from the tournament.

In the other semifinal game, City College of San Francisco beat Santa Barbara City college, 39-37.
