More than 1,400 athletes from 70 high schools will have to wait until next Satrurday to compete in the Northridge-Alemany Relays at Cal State Northridge.

Meet organizers late Friday were forced to postpone the event because of soggy and muddy grounds.

Teams scheduled to compete include three-time defending state champion Hawthorne, Pasadena Muir, Kennedy and Saugus.

Competition begins at 9 a.m. Raiders in Charity Game

The Los Angeles Raiders will play a charity basketball game against a team of television celebrities tonight at Birmingham High.

Marcus Allen and Howie Long are expected to play for the Raiders. Mark Harmon, Robbie Benson and Connie Sellecca will play for the celebrities.

University of Arizona basketball player Kirsten Smith, a former Southern Section 3-A player of the year at Alemany High, has been named to the Pac-West all conference first team.

Smith, a 5-5 senior guard, averaged 13 points and 5 assists a game.

Smith finished her basketball career as the all-time scoring and assist leader at Arizona.

Newbury Park High’s Melissa Sutton, the Southern Section 4-A two-mile and cross-country champion, has been selected to the Bonne Bell/Coaches All-American cross-country team.

Marianella Cruz of Louisville High has been named most valuable player in the San Fernando Valley League for basketball.

Former College of the Canyons and Saugus High baseball player Vince Teixeira is batting .456 for UC Santa Barbara and leads the team in home runs (5), runs batted in (23) and hits (26).

Shirley Muldowney of Northridge placed seventh in Friday’s qualifying for the 17th running of the National Hot Rod Assn. Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla.

Muldowney’s time was 5.634 seconds.
