Boxer Steve Watt Dies Three Days After Fight

Share

Scottish welterweight boxing champion Steve Watt died Monday night in London, less than three days after collapsing in the ring at the end of a 10-round bout.

Watt, 28, sank into a coma shortly after having been stopped by England’s Rocky Kelly in the final round of their nontitle fight last Friday. He never regained consciousness.

Watt collapsed as he returned to his corner. Reports from ringside said that Watt had taken a couple of punches to the head in the final round.

Watt’s death will be investigated by Britain’s top boxing panel, which immediately came under renewed pressure to change the rules governing the sport.

Watt died at Charing Cross Hospital, where he had undergone surgery for removal of a blood clot Friday night. The cause of his death was not immediately announced.
