A San Diego woman was killed Wednesday when the car in which she was riding with her husband was struck by another auto that became airborne after its driver lost control of his vehicle on Interstate 8 in La Mesa, police said.

The fatal accident occurred when a westbound driver, after several erratic lane changes, hit the freeway’s center divider, causing his car to shoot across all four lanes, according to a spokeswoman for the California Highway Patrol. The car then became airborne as it left the freeway, and landed on another auto on La Suvida Drive, a frontage road, in which the victim was a passenger.

The driver who lost control of his car, Darvis Edward Marone, 26, of San Diego, was booked into County Jail on charges of manslaughter and felony drunk driving, a police spokeswoman said. Both Marone and the victim’s husband, a sergeant in the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, suffered minor injuries.
