HIGH SCHOOL SPRING HIGHLIGHTS : Thousand Oaks Beats Camarillo on Willis’ Wild Pitch in the 8th

Ricky Strickland of Thousand Oaks High scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Camarillo reliever Travis Willis in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Hunters beat the Scorpions, 9-8.

Earlier in the inning, Strickland had tied the score when his pinch-hit double scored Steve Sisco.

Camarillo (5-3 overall, 1-1) was led by second baseman Billy Saylor, who was 5 for 5 with a home run. He also scored two runs and batted in two.

Tom Neumayr took the mound in the third inning and picked up his second win for Thousand Oaks (4-6, 1-0).

Baseball

El Camino Real 8, Reseda 4--Jeff Scheneman’s grand slam highlighted a seven-run fourth inning for El Camino Real in its Valley 4-A League win at home.

The Conquistadores’ Ray Sabado was 2 for 3 with two runs batted in.

Cleveland 1, Taft 0--Aran Zullo singled home Tony Margolis in the bottom of the second inning to give Cleveland its lone run in the West Valley League opener at Cleveland.

Right-hander Bob LaRosa (1-0) pitched a complete game and struck out three.

Grant 8, Hollywood 3--Don Hussey pitched five scoreless innings to lead the Lancers to the win in the East Valley League game at home.

Hussey (1-1), a senior right-hander, struck out eight and allowed only two hits before leaving after the fifth inning. The Lancers’ Jason Peterson had a home run and two RBIs.

Polytechnic 9, Fairfax 6--The Parrots led after five innings, 9-1, then hung on in an East Valley League game at home.

Poly’s Ray Palafox had a one-hitter after five innings, but was removed in the sixth when Fairfax scored four runs. Hans Hekking picked up his first save.

San Fernando 6, Birmingham 5--Randy Guerrero doubled in Kenyatta Morris in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Tigers the hard-earned Mid-Valley League opening victory at San Fernando.

North Hollywood 17, Verdugo Hills 0--Peter Washington was 3 for 3 as the Huskies won easily at home.

Washington knocked in four runs and scored a run. The Huskies’ Jesse Hilton was 2 for 2 with an RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases.

Faith Baptist 5, Flintridge Prep 0--Shaik Nabi did not allow a hit over the last 6 innings as the Contenders won the non-league game at home.

Nabi (3-1), a sophomore right-hander, has not allowed an earned run in his last 14 innings. The Contenders’ Allan Moreau was 2 for 3 with a RBI.

Kennedy 12, Van Nuys 5--Dain Turner and Darren Farrell each had three hits to lead the Golden Cougars to the Mid-Valley League win at Van Nuys.

Van Nuys was led by Mitch Sgro, who had a three-run triple in the fourth inning.

Chatsworth 8, Canoga Park 4--Sal Barrocas had a three-run double in the fifth inning to lead the Chancellors to the West Valley League win at home.

Chaminade 6, La Salle 2--Denny Vigo hit a one-out grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Eagles to a dramatic victory in the Santa Fe League opener at Chaminade.

Softball

Burroughs 2, Dos Pueblos 0--Christy Alves struck out 13 and won her 10th game of the year as Burroughs won the Simi Valley tournament championship.

Burroughs (10-0) scored both of its runs in the first inning. Alves stopped Dos Pueblos on five hits and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Louisville 10, Immaculate Heart 0--Kristen Heather and Dianna Hepman combined on a no-hitter as the Royals won the San Fernando Valley league game at home.

Becky Long of Louisville hit a two-run home run.

Royal 2, Thousand Oaks 1--The Highlanders’ Colleen Walker scored the winning run on Diana Avery’s bunt single in the bottom of the seventh.

El Camino Real 18, Van Nuys 0--The Conquistadores stole 12 bases en route to the West Valley League win at home.

Beth Silverman pitched a four-hitter and struck out 11 for El Camino. Silverman and teammate Stacy Trapp each had three hits.

Chaminade 12, Corvallis 1--Kris Iwafuchi pitched a two-hitter and led the Eagles, who scored nine runs in the second inning, to the San Fernando Valley League win in a five-inning game at home.

Volleyball

Chatsworth def. Birmingham 15-1, 15-5, 15-3--Raphael Tulino had 14 kills to lead the Chancellors to the win in the West Valley League opener at Chatsworth. Mark Root had 13 kills for Chatsworth.

Kennedy def. El Camino Real 15-6, 15-4, 15-4--Greg Friedman had 10 kills and Josh Klapow had 10 solo blocks to lead the Golden Cougars to a convincing victory in the West Valley League opener.

Canoga Park def. Reseda 15-9, 15-9, 15-9--John Henry had 10 kills and seven blocks to lead the Hunters in the Mid-Valley League opener.

Boys Track

Oakwood 96, Faith Baptist 91, Buckley 19, Brentwood 8--Mitch Butler of Oakwood was the outstanding performer with 18 points at the quadrangular meet at Buckley.

The freshman won the long jump at 20-0, the high jump at 5-8 and the triple jump at 39-4.

Gymnastics

San Fernando 123, Southgate 103.9--Nicholas Esparza scored an 8.4 on the long horse to lead the Tigers to the non-league win.
