An energy-efficient house in Yuba County, a house in Pacific Palisades that made extensive use of an existing structure, and an apartment project in San Francisco were among the winners in the 1985 Awards of Excellence contest sponsored by California Building Officials, a Sacramento-based association of local government code enforcement professionals.

There was a tie in the high-rise residential or commercial (fewer than six stories) category between Foothill Design Group for the Pavilions, Sacramento, and Roland/Miller/Associates for the Sonoma-Cutrer Winery.

Architect Robert Duncan Nichol won in the high-rise category for Harper Plaza, San Francisco, while Stanly E. Panko won in the rehabilitation of an existing building category for his remodeling of the 1954-vintage San Mateo City Hall.
