UCI Advances in Tennis Tournament

UC Irvine defeated Wichita State, 5-4, in the quarterfinals of the UC Irvine/Marriott McDonald’s tennis tournament at UCI.

The 22nd-ranked Anteaters (10-4) won four singles matches and had to rely on the No. 3 doubles team of reserve Mike Cadigan and Julian Barham for the clinching win. Cadigan was playing in place of the injured Mark Kaplan.

Wichita State fell to 12-3.

In quarterfinal action at the Ridgeline Tennis Club in Orange, Chapman, the top-ranked NCAA Division II team, lost to No. 16 Maryland, 5-3. The Terrapins are the defending tournament champions. The Panthers’ Troy Turnbull won his No. 1 singles match against John Zahurak, 6-3, 6-2.

In other quarterfinal action, Duke beat Arizona State, 5-1, at the Newport Beach Marriott and Arkansas Little Rock upset Harvard, 5-1, at UCI.

In consolation action, Utah beat Illinois, 7-2, Fresno State defeated New Mexico, 5-2, Indiana beat Houston, 5-1, and Arizona swept Northwestern, 9-0.

In today’s semifinals, Maryland faces Duke at noon at the Newport Beach Marriott and UCI plays Arkansas Little Rock at 1:30 p.m. at UCI.

In the fifth-place semifinals, Chapman faces Arizona State at noon at Ridgeline and Wichita State plays Harvard at 1:30 p.m. at UCI.

In consolation action, Utah faces Fresno State at noon at the Mesa Verde Country Club and Indiana takes on Arizona at 9 a.m. at UCI.

In the 13th-place semifinals, Illinois plays New Mexico at noon at the Park Newport and Houston faces Northwestern at 9 a.m. at UCI.
