Basketball Coach Paul Evans of Navy, whose team reached the final of the East Regional tournament before losing to top-ranked Duke, has returned to Annapolis, Md., without reaching a decision on his coaching future, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Evans, 41, met with university officials Tuesday in Pittsburgh to discuss terms of a contract to replace Roy Chipman, who retired. Evans also talked with University of Houston officials earlier in the day in Houston about the coaching job left vacant by the retirement of Guy Lewis.
Quoting unidentified sources the Pittsburgh Press said that Evans, a native of Arcade, N.Y., preferred Pittsburgh to Houston because of its Eastern location and membership in the Big East Conference, but the Post-Gazette quoted a Pitt spokesman as saying no announcement was immediately forthcoming.
Evans earlier had met with USC Athletic Director Mike McGee about the possibility of replacing Stan Morrison as coach of the Trojans.
