San Diego Lions AA Baseball : Mission Bay Routs Torrey Pines, 13-0

Fallbrook, Mission Bay, Serra and Valhalla high schools all won Tuesday to advance to the semifinals of the 36th Annual Lions/Mike Morrow Invitational Tournament.

Today, Fallbook will play Serra at Hilltop, and Valhalla will play at Mission Bay. Both games begin at 10:30 a.m. The winners will play for the championship at 2:30 at Hilltop.

Fallbrook, Serra and Valhalla all swept through their four-team pools unbeaten. Mission Bay tied with San Marcos and Southwest, but the Buccaneers advanced because they allowed fewer runs.

Tuesday, Mission Bay shut out Torrey Pines, 13-0, as Rusty Filter had two hits and drove in four runs. Winning pitcher Scott Vonderleith worked the first five innings and allowed three hits.

In other games Tuesday:

Fallbrook 10, Bonita Vista 3--David Waite collected four hits, including a home run and a double, and drove in three runs as the Warriors won at Crawford. Ty Barksdale went 3 for 4, and Bill Dunckel had two hits and two RBIs.

The score was tied, 1-1, after two innings, but Fallbrook broke the game open with six runs in the third. Winning pitcher Jeff Comer went the distance, scattering five hits and striking out seven.

Serra 9, Hoover 7--Richie Callendar drove in the tying and go-ahead runs as Serra rallied to win with three runs in the top of the seventh at Hoover. Callendar had three hits and three RBIs in the game to lead the Conquistadors.

Ken Matthews had three hits and two RBIs for Hoover, which finished 1-2 in the tournament. Danny Clifford had two hits for the losers.

Valhalla 11, Hilltop 9 (13 inn.)--Scott Dennison hit a two-run single in the 13th to break an 8-8 tie at Hilltop and send the Norsemen to the semifinals.

Rob Sharp homered and doubled and Brett Strickland had two hits and two RBIs for the winners in the game, which lasted 4 hours and 22 minutes.

Valhalla, which outhit Hilltop, 18-12, held leads of 4-0, 7-4 and 8-7 before the Lancers tied the score in the bottom of the seventh. Hilltop also had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the 13th before Valhalla pitcher Steve Gomez struck out two batters to end it. Gomez picked up the save in relief of Steve Phoenix.

Orange Glen 4, Kearny 2--Ray Chattman allowed five hits and struck out six as Orange Glen won at Hilltop. Both of Kearny’s runs were unearned.

University City 8, Crawford 4--Scott Jalowayski and Kevin Stewart each drove in two runs at Crawford to give University City its only win in the tournament. Winning pitcher Jeff Shafer had four hits for the winners. Crawford finished 0-3.
