Mark Aguirre scored 38 points, and the Dallas Mavericks clinched a berth in the National Basketball Assn. playoffs for the third straight season with a 110-105 victory over the New York Knicks Thursday night at New York.

Aguirre made eight of his first 11 shots and scored 21 points while playing 10 minutes in the first quarter as the Mavericks built a 37-26 lead.

Despite 35 points by Ken Bannister, the Knicks never caught up.

New York, which already had five players sidelined for the season because of injuries, suffered another setback when guard Rory Sparrow broke his left ankle in a collision with Derek Harper less than five minutes into the game. He will be in a cast for six weeks.
