Padre Notebook : A Day Before Roster Cut, Padres Hit Sevens in Win

Times Staff Writer

The Padres scored seven runs on seven hits in the seventh inning to erase a 7-0 Seattle lead, and then seven-year veteran Bruce Bochy’s bases-loaded double in the 11th gave them an 8-7 victory here Thursday night.

Lucky seven.

But the players won’t be able to spend much time savoring it, since today is cutdown day. Six Padres will be trimmed from the roster.

An unlucky six.

Four will be pitchers--Ed Wojna, Bob Patterson, Greg Booker and Ed Vosberg. One will be a catcher--Mark Parent.

The last guy to go will be an outfielder--either John Kruk or Jerry Davis.

The statistics and the talk in camp point to Davis.

Kruk had a two-run double in that seventh inning Thursday night, giving him a team-leading 14 RBIs this spring. He leads the team in doubles (seven) and in average (.486). Manager Steve Boros said Thursday night: “He’s amazing . . . remarkable.”

Davis made his last bid, though. He came through with a pinch-hit single in the ninth, but his spring performance hasn’t been impressive: .250 average, three doubles, two RBIs.

One more thing: Davis had arthroscopic knee surgery Jan. 18 and has played hurt all spring, which could explain his mediocrity.

Nothing mediocre about Tony Gwynn. He had two hits in the seventh, and he has hit safely in 13 straight games.

Pitcher Dave Dravecky started Thursday, and gave up seven runs, including three home runs (two by outfielder Phil Bradley). Padre starters have yielded first-inning runs in six of their last eight games.

San Diego has completed two minor league trades:

- Outfielder George Hinshaw, who has tried and failed to make a switch to third base, was traded to Cleveland for minor league right-hander Rich Doyle, 22.

Doyle had a combined 9-7 record last year, pitching for both Maine and Waterbury. The Padres will send him to Beaumont (AA) this season.

- Outfielder Kevin (no relation to Alan) Wiggins, formerly of San Diego State, was traded to Orlando for a player to be named later.

Regarding today’s roster cuts, Boros will tell one of the pitchers to stay prepared. In case LaMarr Hoyt is not ready to join the roster by opening day, the Padres will call up a pitcher for probably two weeks, or at least until Hoyt is ready to pitch.

That pitcher probably would be Bob Patterson or Ed Vosberg based on their latest performances.
