San Diego Roundup : Youth Soccer Tournament to Feature Best of West

More than 220 teams featuring some of the best youth soccer players in the Western United States will compete today and Saturday at various sites throughout the county in the Mission Bay soccer tournament.
The tournament, in its seventh year, will include teams from Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Kansas, Nevada and Washington.
Host Mission Bay Soccer Club, the La Jolla Nomads and El Cajon Hot Spurs will be among the area teams competing at the tournament.
Games will be played at Madison High School, Hickman Field, UC San Diego La Jolla’s Allen Field, Clairemont High and Kearny High. The finals of the tournament will be Saturday at Madison High. Admission is free for all games.
The Padres, including Manager Steve Boros, will attend the “Welcome Padres Luncheon” Thursday at the Scottish Rites Center in Mission Valley.
Tickets for the luncheon, in its third year, are $15 and can be purchased at the Kiwanis Office at the Scottish Rites Center or the Holiday Bowl office at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Padre announcer Jerry Coleman will act as master of ceremonies.
The Dennis James, Physicians Mutual “Swing from the Heart” Pro-Am Celebrity Golf Tournament will be played today and Saturday at the Rancho Bernardo Inn Course.
Each of the 36 four-member teams will include one celebrity and three amateurs. A professional also will be assigned to each team.
The $300 entry fee for the 36-hole tournament will include daily green and cart fees, tee package, pairings party, daily brunch, evening entertainment and awards banquet.
Proceeds from the tournament will go to the Palomar Pomerado Health Foundation’ cardiac rehabilitation program. Amateurs wishing to play should contact Karen Barron at the foundations office.
The U.S. women’s volleyball team will face Japan at 7:30 Tuesday night at UC San Diego’s Campus Gymnasium.
Tickets for the match are available at all Teleseat outlets. Tickets for adults are $7.50, and $5 for children under 12. There is $1 discount for students, members of the military and senior citizens.
