Crouser Tosses New-Style Javelin a Record 262 Feet
American Brian Crouser set a world outdoor best for the new-style javelin Thursday night with a throw of 262 feet.
Crouser’s mark, on the final evening of the two-night Tahiti International track and field meet, topped the previous best of 257-3 1/2 by West Germany’s Klaus Tafelmeier at the Crystal Palace in London.
Crouser’s performance is expected to be ratified internationally April 1.
The new javelin was introduced into competition this year. Although it is the same weight as the old javelin, its center of gravity is nearer the point, causing it to drop quicker than the old javelin. The record for the old-style javelin is 343-10, set by Uwe Hohn of East Germany in l984.
