OH, OSCAR

Pat H. Broeske’s premise about the Oscars was way off base (“Is Oscar Out of Touch?,” March 23).
To say that the Oscars are “out of touch” because they reward excellence instead of box-office gross is like saying that the National Book Awards and Pulitzers for literature are “out of touch” because they don’t hand out awards to Judith Krantz, Jackie Collins and Sidney Sheldon.
Sure, these writers are best sellers, but does that mean they’re the best?
Sorry if it sounds elitist, but the general public is not the best judge when it comes to quality. Despite all of the political considerations involved in such peer awards as the Oscars, they still come closer.
Top stars, like best-selling authors, have their own rewards--more money.
