The Laemmle Theatres group today will begin operating the Colorado Theatre in Pasadena, bringing to 18 the number of screens the organization, which specializes in the art-film market, operates in the Los Angeles area.

Laemmle purchased the building housing the Colorado, located at 2588 E. Colorado Blvd., from SRO Theaters, and took over the operation rights for the theater itself from the Pacific Theaters chain.

The Colorado marks its entry into the Laemmle system by showing “The Official Story,” winner of the 1985 best foreign-language film Oscar.

“We have no further plans to expand beyond this right now,” said Max Laemmle, the chain’s president. “We aren’t really expansion minded; we were just looking for something that fit into our way of doing business. And, based on how we were doing with the Esquire (Laemmle’s other Pasadena theater), a second theater in Pasadena seemed like something we should look into. This is the result.”
