Notebook : McKeon Gets Wynne for Patterson

Pitcher Rick Rhoden was the man the Padres wanted from Pittsburgh. Outfielder Marvell Wynne was the man they got Thursday.

Wynne, considered a fast runner and good defensive player, was acquired from the Pirates for left-handed reliever Bob Patterson.

“We’ve talked about Wynne for a couple of weeks in a package deal with Rhoden involved,” said Jack McKeon, Padre general manager. “It’s up to Pittsburgh now to decide what Pittsburgh wants to do with Rhoden. I was trying to get Rhoden and ended up with Wynne. The Pirates told me they were going to keep Rhoden for a while.”

Just how long Rhoden will remain a Pirate is questionable. McKeon thinks the Pirates may still be trying to shop for the best deal on Rhoden, who has asked to be traded.

Wynne, 26, gives the Padres two items they need--speed on the bases and a late-inning defensive replacement in the outfield.

“I can see myself having him pinch-run for Steve Garvey, getting a stolen base, and, hopefully, scoring a run,” Manager Steve Boros said. “Then, I could move Carmelo Martinez from left field to first base, Kevin McReynolds from center field to left field and put Marvell in center. Late in the game, Marvell could pinch-run for any of our slower players.”

Boros said that McReynolds, the starting center fielder, would play left field periodically Saturday and Sunday against Minnesota in Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, the Padres must now make another roster move before Monday’s opener at Los Angeles.

Among the possibilities:

--Starting the season with nine pitchers, excluding LaMarr Hoyt. The Padres would still need to cut a player when Hoyt returned.

--Sending John Kruk to the minors or releasing Bobby Brown. Kruk is the team’s leading spring hitter and Brown has a guaranteed contract.

Padre Notes

Four Padres pitched a combined three-hitter in an 8-0 win over San Diego State Thursday night at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Eric Show allowed two hits in five innings, Dave Dravecky allowed one hit in two innings and Craig Lefferts and Gene Walter each pitched one hitless inning. Tony Gwynn and Graig Nettles, former SDSU players, led the Padre offense. Gwynn had a single, double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Nettles had a single, solo home run and two runs scored.
