Tennis Roundup : Wilkison, Pate Gain Semifinals

Tim Wilkison and David Pate won quarterfinal matches Friday to set up a date in the semifinals of the $279,000 WCT tennis tournament at Atlanta.

Wilkison, who upset Wimbledon champion Boris Becker in the first round, beat his doubles partner, Mike Leach, 6-1, 7-6, while Pate ousted third-seeded Brad Gilbert, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

In other matches, fourth-seeded Kevin Curren defeated Eliot Teltscher, 6-3, 6-1, and Brian Teacher downed Mikael Pernfors, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6.

Winning the last 10 games, Bonnie Gadusek bounced back to beat Andrea Temesvari of Hungary, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, to reach the semifinals of the $150,000 Tournament of Champions at Marco Island, Fla.

In another match, 18-year-old Janine Thompson of Australia defeated Patricia Medrado of Brazil, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Today, Gadusek will play top-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd, and Thompson will meet Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany. Lloyd and Kohde-Kilsch won their quarterfinals Thursday.

In the first round of the $250,000 Women’s Team Championship, also at Marco Island, top-seeded Pam Shriver and Barbara Potter were upset by Kathy Jordan and Elise Burgin, 7-5, 6-1.

In the River Oaks tournament at Houston, fifth-seeded Jimmy Arias beat third-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden, 6-2, 6-0, and advanced to the semifinals.

In another quarterfinal, top-seeded Mats Wilander of Sweden outlasted Richie Reneberg, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
