College Baseball : UNLV Takes Over PCAA Lead With 10-6 Win

University of Nevada Las Vegas scored eight runs in the top of the ninth inning--all with two outs--to rally from a 6-2 deficit and beat Cal State Fullerton, 10-6, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball game Saturday at Titan Field.

Reed Peters' wind-blown grand slam capped an wild Las Vegas rally that included a hard-hit ground ball by Matt Lagunas that caromed off the temple of Fullerton third baseman Pat Garman and into foul territory for a ground-rule double that scored two runs and tied the score at 6-6. The Titans committed two throwing errors in the inning to help the Rebels sustain the rally.

The win enables Las Vegas (4-1, 22-11) to pass the Titans (3-2, 24-12) in the PCAA standings. The teams play the final game of the series today at 1 p.m. at Titan Field.

In other PCAA action:

Cal State Long Beach 7, UC Irvine 4--The 49ers scored four runs in the sixth inning to snap a 2-2 tie and held on for the win at Irvine. Derek Stewart and Mark Fryen each had two-run singles to spark the Long Beach rally. Sid Herrera was 3 for 5 with two doubles and scored three runs for Long Beach (2-3, 10-17-1). Tom Baine had a two-run homer in the seventh for UCI (1-4, 11-15-2), extending his hitting streak to nine games. Baine has hit safely in 22 of his last 23 games.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. action:

Chapman College 2-4, Cal State Los Angeles 1-1--Rob Glisson pitched a complete-game, two-hitter and Jon Hulshof and Steve Dunn combined on a four-hitter in the second game as the Panthers (5-4, 13-18) swept the doubleheader at Hart Park.

In NAIA District 3 action:

Southern California College 12-2, Biola 2-8--Ron Nelson had a home run, two doubles and scored three runs to lead the Vanguards (5-3, 20-10) to the win in the first game at Biola. Biola combined two hits, three walks and two SCC errors to score four runs in the fourth inning en route to the win in the second game.
