Jaime Garza knocked out Jorge Diaz of Mexico in the third round of their scheduled 10-round super-bantamweight fight in the first professional boxing show here in more than nine years.

Garza, the former World Boxing Council super-bantamweight champion fighting at 125 pounds, took Diaz out with a right uppercut at 1:20 of the third round.

It was Garza’s 42nd victory in 43 decisions and his 40th knockout. Diaz is 23-6.

The six-bout card crew a near capacity crowd of 1,100 to the Hilton Riviera Hotel.

Garza’s victory came in his second fight since losing the title to Juan (Kid) Meza in November 1984. He had scored a third-round knockout over Arnel Arrozal in February. Garza was scheduled to fight last month at Reseda’s Country Club against Lupe Martinez. But Martinez didn’t show.
