College Baseball : Orange Coast Stays Unbeaten in Conference
Rob Gibbs had three hits and Rex Peters added two hits Tuesday to help Orange Coast College defeat Saddleback, 7-4, in a South Coast Conference game at Mission Viejo.
The first-place Pirates (11-0 in conference, 22-4 overall) increased their winning streak to 15. Jay Makemson, who relieved John Dishon in the fifth inning and completed the game, was the winning pitcher. The Gauchos are 5-7 and 13-9.
In other South Coast Conference action:
Rancho Santiago 6, Mt. San Antonio 4--The Dons scored three runs in peculiar fashion in their win over the Mounties at Mt. SAC. In the second inning, Rancho Santiago’s Ruben Gonzales scored on a wild pitch. Frank Appice lead off the third inning with a single and then scored from first base on a wild pickoff throw.
In the fourth, Chris Chase was on third with the bases loaded and no outs. Troy Barnhart into a double play that scored Chase. On the play, the Dons’ Mitch Swalley attempted to score from second base and was thrown out, so technically, Chase scored on a triple play.
Golden West 11, Cerritos 4--Trailing, 4-0, after two innings, the Rustlers scored three runs in the third and four in the fifth to take control at Golden West College. Darrin Pomasick was 4 for 6 with a double and three RBIs for the Rustlers (7-5, 13-9). Teammate Sand Eric Shirley was 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.
Cypress 10, Fullerton 4--Chris Kocman hit a two-run home run and Rene Licon added a solo home run for the Chargers at Fullerton. Jeff Mooney (4-1) started and Randy Bouman took over in the eighth. Jeff Nicks and Mark Baca had three hits for Cypress (7-4, 21-7). The Hornets fell to 5-7 in the SCC and 11-13 overall.
In nonconference college action:
University of San Diego 8, UC Irvine 0--Tom Sizer allowed five hits, struck out six and retired 11 of the last 13 batters for the Toreros (19-16-2) at USD. Mark Trafton went 4 for 4 with a triple for the Toreros.
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. action:
Cal Poly Pomona 6, Chapman 3--Steve Manes and Tom Weeks each had two hits and two RBIs for the Broncos at Pomona. Chapman is 5-5 in conference, 13-19 overall.
In NAIA District 3 action:
Pt. Loma 2, Southern California College 1 (12 innings)--Steve Napier had an RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Crusaders (3-3, 11-18) past the Vanguards (5-4, 20-11) at Pt. Loma.
In Western Christian Athletic Assn. action:
Christ College of Irvine 16, Pacific Coast Baptist 4--Charlie Conner and Fred Hartman each hit three-run homers for CCI (5-2, 10-10) in its win at home.
