With a prestige name on board like “Miami Vice” impresario Michael Mann, you’d think that Tri-Star Pics would be going out of its way to tout “Band of the Hand,” which opened Friday, with Mann serving as exec producer.
The TV critics’ darling gets a big plug in the studio’s ad (“From the Maker of ‘Miami Vice’ ”), but Tri-Star has kept the film under wraps, declining to screen it for critics. “It was a joint decision between the studio and the film makers,” a Tri-Star spokeswoman said. “Sometimes we choose to screen our films, and sometimes we don’t.”
