LSU Athletic Director Will Admit to Conspiring

Bob Brodhead, the athletic director at Louisiana State University, will plead guilty Friday in federal court to conspiring to intercept and divulge a radio communication, his attorney said.

The plea, worked out in a deal with federal prosecutors, stems from an investigation of electronic bugging devices found in Brodhead’s office last October.

The offense is punishable by a maximum sentence of six months in prison and a $1,000 fine.

A raid on Brodhead’s office, triggered by a tip from the man who said he had helped install the devices, uncovered a transmitter in the telephone headset on Brodhead’s desk; another transmitter in his “Handbook for Everyday Law,” also on his desk, and a receiver and a tape recorder in his desk.

Last October, Brodhead told reporters that the bugging was intended to be part of a plan to catch people who were leaking athletic department information to reporters.
