Walton Heads South All-Stars in Basketball Game

Saddleback High School guard Bryant Walton, The Times’ Orange County Player of the Year, heads the selections for the South team in the Orange County All-Star basketball game June 21 in Orange Coast College’s Peterson Gym.

Walton will attend the University of California in the fall. He averaged 24.3 points, 11.2 rebounds, 6.4 assists and shot 56% from the field last season.

The South figures to be strong in the backcourt with Nathan Call of Capistrano Valley, who averaged 8.8 assists per game, and Jeff Fryer of Corona del Mar, the county’s leading scorer with a 27.8 average.

Greg Coombs will coach the team. He has compiled an 82-41 record in five seasons at Santa Ana High and has led the Saints to four straight CIF Southern Section playoff appearances.

Magnolia High School’s Michelle Carter, who set Orange County scoring records for points in a game and in a season this year, heads the girls’ North team for the Orange County All-Star basketball game June 21 at Orange Coast College’s Peterson Gym.

Carter, a 6-2 center, scored 781 points to set the season mark, and scored 55 against Anaheim to set the single-game mark. She averaged 30.5 points and 18 rebounds per game this season.

Besides Carter, the North boasts two other high scoring players.

Jill Matyuch, a 5-8 guard/forward from El Dorado, averaged 25.8 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. She was named the Empire League’s Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season.

Sharon Warmus, a 5-11 forward from Esperanza, averaged 21.8 points and 8.3 rebounds and led the Aztecs to the 3-A semifinals.

Mickey McAulay of Katella will coach the North team.
