Orange County Prep Baseball Roundup : El Modena’s Hively, Black Team for No-Hitter

Sophomore Todd Hively and senior Dave Black combined to pitch a no-hitter Friday to lead El Modena High School to a 1-0 win over Villa Park in a Century League game at El Modena.

Hively pitched the first 3 innings, but was removed in the fourth inning--with the score tied at 0-0--after walking two batters. He was relieved by Black who allowed a walk over the final 3 innings.

El Modena (5-3, 8-7) scored in the seventh when senior Ed Villela singled to drive in John Thompson who had led off the inning with a single.

Rich Simmons took the loss for Villa Park (4-4, 7-15).

In other Century League action:

Canyon 15, Santa Ana 6--Senior first baseman Ralph Garcia had two singles, a double and four RBIs to lead the Comanches to an easy win. Every starter had at least one hit for Canyon which scored four runs in the first and seven in the fifth. Senior Larry Houck (4-0) made his first league start. Chuck Zacour was 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs and teammate Mike Townley was 2 for 4 and scored two runs for Canyon (6-2, 11-6). John Hefler (4-2) took the loss for the Santa Ana (4-4, 12-6).

Foothill 18, Orange 7--The Knights broke loose in the fifth inning with eight runs including a two-run homer by Pat Crawford. Chris Cutliff was 3 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs and Doug Kopcha was 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs for the Knights (6-2, 11-6). Eric Merker was 2 for 2 with three RBIs for Foothill, which sent 15 batters to the plate in the fifth inning. The Knights had 20 hits. The Panthers are 0-8 and 4-14 overall.

In Freeway League action:

Sonora 13, Fullerton 12--The Raiders scored five runs in the top of the seventh to break an 8-8 tie and needed everyone of them because the Indians countered with four. David Bird (9-0) relieved in the bottom of the sixth with a four-run lead and gave up a grand slam to Jeff Bailey to tie the score at 8-8. Three of the four runs Bird gave up in the seventh were unearned. The first-place Raiders (9-0, 18-1) made five errors. Rob Stuart hit his fifth home run in the first. Scott Einhorn and Brian Miller hit homers in the sixth for Sonora. Bailey had two hits and five RBIs for Fullerton (5-4, 12-5). Bird was 3 for 3 with three RBIs.

Sunny Hills 7, Buena Park 2--David Wackerman (5-3) pitched a complete game and the Lancers took advantage of seven errors for the win. Rob Tash was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and teammate Kevin Monson was on base all four times for Sunny Hills (5-4, 8-9). He had two singles, walked once and was put aboard on an error. He scored two runs. The Lancers scored three times in the third to take the lead after being behind, 1-0, on a home run by Paul Bunch.

Troy 4, La Habra 2--The Warriors scored two runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Highlanders at La Habra. Jason Reese (2-3) had nine strikeouts, but walked six and gave up six hits to take the loss for La Habra (4-5, 6-10). Winning pitcher Chris Robinson allowed just five hits and two unearned runs for the Warriors (5-4, 7-6).

In Garden Grove League action:

Santiago 7, Bolsa Grande 3--Anthony Candelas (4-2) hit a grand slam and pitched four innings to get the win for the Cavaliers (6-3, 11-6). Tim Reynolds hit a solo home run in the first and was 3 for 4. Teammate David Beteruto was 2 for 4. Robbie Walker was 2 for 2 and Mike Valedez was 3 for 4 with a run scored for the Matadors (6-3, 9-7). Tony Beall took the loss.

La Quinta 3, Garden Grove 0--Randy McGlenn pitched a one-hitter and had six strikeouts to to lead the Aztecs (4-5, 12-9) at Garden Grove. Troy Paulsen went 2 for 3 with two singles and an RBI for the Aztecs. The Argonauts (6-3, 9-7) fell into a first-place tie with Bolsa Grande and Santiago.

Los Amigos 10, Rancho Alamitos 8--The Lobos scored three runs in the seventh to defeat the Vaqueros. Matt Phelps hit a three-run home run in the first inning and relieved winning pitcher Leo Garcia (1-2) in the sixth inning to get the save. Phelps is 15 for 23 and is hitting .650 in league.

In Orange League action:

Western 6, Savanna 3--The Pioneers were led by the pitching of Jeff Lodding and the poor defense of the Rebels. Winning pitcher Jeff Lodding pitched a complete game, striking out seven and allowing nine hits. Savanna is 4-5, 5-8.

Anaheim 1, Magnolia 0--Third baseman Will Barber doubled home catcher Mike Parker in the third with the only run. Parker opened the inning with a single and stole second before scoring on Barber’s double. Barber was 2 for 3. Anthony Martinez pitched a three-hitter for Anaheim (2-7, 5-13). He has not allowed an earned run in his last 14 innings. He lost to Western 1-0 last Friday when he threw a wild pitch with a runner on third. Kirk Hainline took the loss for the Sentinels (3-6, 8-8).

Brea-Olinda 3, Valencia 2--Mike Oziminski hit a two-run home run, and singled in another run as the Wildcats upset the Tigers at home. Oziminski was 3 for 3 and also stole a base. Jim Murray (3-1) pitched a three-hitter, giving up two hits in the first and the other in the fifth for the Wildcats (5-4, 8-8). Valencia (5-4, 8-7) dropped into a second-place tie with Brea-Olinda.

In South Coast League action:

Capistrano Valley 11, El Toro 8--Nathan Call hit a three-run home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 6-6 tie for the Cougars (4-3, 11-6). Scott Stark (5-2) came in the third with the bases loaded in relief of starter Brett Snyder and gave up a grand slam but still got the win. Chis Ashback was 1 for 3 with three RBIs and Bill Bardens was 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Capistrano Valley. El Toro is 2-5 in league and 9-12 overall.

Mission Viejo 2, San Clemente 1--The Diablos (5-1, 14-3) scored two runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Marc Phil Mangran who moved to second on an error and scored Phil Mangran’s single. San Clemente (0-7, 4-13) scored in the third.

Irvine 17, Laguna Hills 0--Senior Bobby Hameline hit a pair of two-run home runs, had a three-run double and hit a sacrifice fly to finish with eight RBIs for Irvine (7-0-1, 13-6-1). He is the county leader with 35 RBIs. The Hawks are 2-4-1 in league and 10-9-1 overall.

In Sunset League action:

Edison 2, Fountain Valley--The Chargers (3-6, 10-10) scored two runs in the fourth and pitcher Frank Vidales (2-2) made them stand up. Jeff Broulutte singled and scored when Berrie Colacchio followed with a single and was trapped in a rundown. A Baron error allowed Colacchio to get to third. Chris Powell singled him home. Rob Flynn took the loss for the Barons (3-5-1, 10-7-1)

Huntington Beach 7, Edison 4--The Oilers trailed by two runs in the top of the seventh before scoring five runs for the win. After Huntington Beach loaded the bases on two walks and an infield single, winning pitcher Jeff Haack hit a ground ball to short that resulted in a two-base throwing error to tie the score at 4-4. After another walk loaded the bases, Jim Dedrick singled to left field to give the Oilers (5-4, 10-8) a two-run lead. The final run scored on a passed ball. Haack (7-2) relieved John Hougan in the fifth and picked up the win. Brent Kanckert took the loss for Ocean View (6-2-1, 12-5-1).

In Olympic League action:

Orange Lutheran 17, Ontario Christian 1--Scot Wire had 15 strikeouts in the win over the Knights. The Lancers (4-4, 6-8) got a three-run home run from Matt Zaun who was 2 for 4 with a double and four RBIs.
