College Baseball : Clark’s Grand Slam Helps Irvine Upset UNLV

Ed Clark hit a grand slam in the fourth inning Friday night to lead UC Irvine to an 8-4 upset of Nevada Las Vegas in Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball action in Las Vegas.

It was Clark’s first home run this season. The Anteaters (4-6, 15-18-2) scored six unearned runs in the fourth. Irvine added two more runs in the sixth.

With two on and nobody out in the fourth, Doug Kline bunted, but the Rebel pitcher looked to third and was too late with his throw to first. After a strikeout, the Anteaters scored the first run on a error on a ground ball hit by Mark Webster. Clark followed with his grand slam.

Gene Roumimper went 3 for 5 for Irvine.

The Rebels (8-2, 26-11) scored all four runs on home runs off winning pitcher Craig Brink (4-3).

Center fielder Reed Peters had two home runs, second baseman Steve Moser hit one and shortstop Matt Williams also homered.

In other PCAA action:

Fresno State 8, Cal State Fullerton 4--The Titans got 10 hits but could score only four runs in the loss to the Bulldogs. Mike Goff (6-5) allowed 10 hits for the win. He did not walk a batter.

Larry Casian pitched the first six innings and left with the score, 2-2. Garry Buckles (0-1) game in and gave up a single to Harvey Brumfield, a bunt single to Jody Allen, and then after faking a bunt, Steve Bates slashed a single into center to break the tie.

Fresno is 5-5, 20-21-1. Ken Garcia was 2 for 4 for the Titans (5-5, 28-15), and Keith Watkins added two hits.
