San Diego College Baseball : USD Splits Doubleheader With Santa Clara

The University of San Diego scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning Saturday, but the University of Santa Clara countered with four runs in its half of the inning to edge the Toreros, 7-6, in the first game of a West Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Toreros won the second game, 4-3.

In the first game, Sean Baron’s two-run homer put the Toreros ahead, 5-3. Later in the inning, USD scored another run on a fielder’s choice. But the Broncos rallied on a two-run double by Gary Maasberg, a Ray Williamson RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Steve Koontz.

In the second game, USD’s Dave Rolas singled in the fifth, stole second and advanced to third on a Bronco throwing error. He scored on a fielder’s choice by Robbie Rogers to give San Diego (4-14) the win. Santa Clara is 8-7.

United States International University 5-8, San Diego State 4-2--The Gulls swept San Diego State by building first-inning leads in each nonconference game. USIU scored five in the first to beat the host Aztecs in the opener.

The inning was highlighted by a two-run double by USIU’s Bob Esquerra and an RBI single by Greg May. Mark Waters and Ian Kelly each added RBI singles for the Gulls.

In the second game, Brian Finan’s two-run single highlighted a six-run effort by USIU in the first inning. Tom Bailey was 2 for 3 and scored three times to pace the Gulls (22-26). SDSU (25-20-1) was led by Dave Campagna (4 for 4) and Eric Woods (4 for 5).

UC San Diego 13-13, Masters College 9-13--UCSD’s Glen Turnipseed hit three home runs in the two games to pace the Tritons (16-14-2) in the nonconference doubleheader. The night cap was called in the ninth because of darkness. UCSD’s Bob Natal was 5 for 9 in the two games, including six RBIs.
