San Diego College Baseball : Erb Pitches No-Hitter as San Diego State Sweeps

San Diego State right-hander Mike Erb pitched a no-hitter Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader at Smith Field to lead the Aztecs to a 5-1 Western Athletic Conference victory over Utah. San Diego State won the second game, 6-0.

Erb, a sophomore from Madison High School in San Diego, gave up a run in the first inning on two walks and a fielding error by second baseman Steve Hill but allowed only one other baserunner. Erb (8-3) struck out eight and walked three.

In the second game, Bob Parry and Rob Angus hit solo home runs in the second inning to help the Aztecs sweep. Scott Lawrence (5-2) and Dave Riddle combined on a five-hitter for SDSU (6-8 in the WAC, 27-20-1 overall). Utah is 3-11, 9-12.

The teams meet again in a doubleheader at 4 p.m. today.

UC San Diego 9, Whittier 3--Derek Alkonis had three hits and drove in five runs to lead the Tritons (17-14-1) at Whittier to their eighth straight victory. Alkonis singled in a run in the first, singled in two in the third and doubled home two in the eighth. Brian Rude also had three hits for UCSD. Rick Nowak (4-2) went the distance on an eight-hitter. Whittier is 12-16.
