A 25-year-old Saugus man was killed Wednesday night when the pickup truck he was driving struck an oncoming car and then crashed into a building, the California Highway Patrol reported.

James Wells was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, where he died of severe head injuries at 11:17 p.m., said CHP Officer Dan Loughrey.

The driver of the car, identified by authorities as Waw Howreak, 26, of Canyon Country, was not injured.

Wells was driving east on Soledad Canyon Road just east of Furnivall Avenue at an estimated 75 to 80 m.p.h. when his truck crossed into the westbound lane and struck Howreak’s car, Loughrey said. Howreak’s car struck a chain link fence that apparently cushioned the crash, Loughrey said.
