MANNY OLIVAS

He does his road work at the Valley defense firm where he works as a messenger, running across the plant time and again throughout the day. But there’s one message Manny Olivas has been unable to deliver. At least until now.

Olivas is a bantamweight fighter who has won eight of his 10 bouts, three by knockout. Fighting out of the Ten Goose Gym in North Hollywood, Olivas has always been an undercard fighter, often putting in his four or six rounds while the fans were still trying to locate their seats.

He would like to be more. On Tuesday night, he can deliver his message as a main event fighter when he takes on Bernie Mack (7-1, 2 knockouts) of San Jose in an eight-round co-main event at the Reseda Country Club.

“He’s never gone past six rounds, but that doesn’t mean he can’t go to the top,” says Dan Goossen, his manager. “He has a long way to go to be a champ, but everybody he fights knows he was there.”

Tuesday’s other co-main event is an eight-round junior featherweight battle between Eddie Rodriguez (12-1, 1 KO) of San Jose and Alex Madrid (10-2, 5 KOs) from San Diego.

Also on the card is a six-rounder between junior lightweight Greg Puente (8-0-1, 6 knockouts) of El Monte and Lamont Baker (6-3, 3 knockouts) of Las Vegas. Puente is managed by former featherweight champ Danny (Little Red) Lopez.

In other preliminary fights, junior middleweights Ronnie Turner (3-3, 1 KO) of Los Angeles and Mike Canfield (2-2, 1 KO) of San Jose are scheduled for six rounds; junior welterweights Johnny Battle (3-0, all by knockout) of Las Vegas and Roscoe Brown (2-1, both wins by knockout) of San Jose are matched in a four-rounder, and welterweights Carlos Gutierrez of East Los Angeles and Darrell Colquist of Los Angeles are set for four rounds. It will be the pro debut for Gutierrez. Colquist’s only pro fight ended in a draw.

The card begins at 8:15 p.m.
