San Diego College Baseball Roundup : SDSU Sweeps Brigham Young to Take Over Second Place

San Diego State, mired in last place in the Western Athletic Conference’s Southern Division with a 1-8 record just two weeks ago, swept a doubleheader from Brigham Young Saturday night at Smith Field to run its winning streak to 11 games and take over second place in the division, 1 1/2 games behind front-running Hawaii.

The Aztecs won Saturday, 6-0 and 6-4, to improve their record to 12-8 in the WAC and 33-20-1 overall. BYU (10-10, 30-18-1) is third in the division. Both teams have four games remaining. The top two teams in the division advance to the WAC playoffs May 8-10.

Scott Lawrence (6-2) pitched a complete-game three-hitter to lead the Aztecs to the win in the first game, and SDSU rallied from a 4-2 deficit to win the nightcap. The Aztecs went ahead in the bottom of the sixth inning on Nikco Riesgo’s RBI single. Tom LeVasseur homered in the eighth to account for the Aztecs’ final run.

SDSU finishes WAC play here next weekend with a four-game series against Hawaii. If the Aztecs sweep that series, they will win the division.

USIU 6-5, Sacramento State 4-4--The Gulls made it 19 wins in their last 24 games with a doubleheader sweep at Sacramento. In the first game, Greg May’s RBI double in the 10th inning snapped a 4-4 tie and made a winner of Noel Bishop (3-3), who pitched 4 innings of scoreless relief. Joe Canales had four RBIs in the game including a three-run double in the eighth inning that helped USIU rally from a 4-0 deficit.

In the second game, Joe Ronis went 4 for 4 and hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to break a 4-4 deadlock. Wally Trice (2-5) allowed four runs in the first inning but settled down from there to pick up the victory. USIU, which hosts Cal State Northridge Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., is 26-28. Sacramento State fell to 38-18.

UC San Diego 17-15, Masters College 1-1--The Tritons (20-14-2) have won 11 straight after their sweep of Masters College from Newhall. Dan DiMascio drove in seven runs to help power UCSD to its first-game win, and Bob Natal and Dan Petersen each hit grand slams to give the Tritons the win in the second game. Natal has 12 home runs and 47 RBIs for the season, both school records.
