Third-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden beat new father Yannick Noah of France, 6-3, 6-2, Sunday to win the rain-plagued $325,000 Monte Carlo Open at Monaco.

The final, reduced from five to three sets because showers held up the start for 90 minutes, was played in light rain.

Nystrom collected $58,500 for his victory, while Noah, whose wife, Cecilia, gave birth to a baby girl the night before in New York, won $29,250.

It was the fourth tournament victory of the year for Nystrom, a 23-year-old Swede who beaten Noah two months ago in the Grand Prix tournament in La Quinta, Calif.

The fourth-seeded Noah looked tired throughout the final.

“I was not into the game. I wasn’t thinking about the match because this morning I had a little daughter and that for me is more important,” said Noah, who splits his time between Paris and New York.

Noah won just three of his eight service games.

Nystrom stayed patiently at the baseline throughout the contest and passed Noah easily when Noah approached the net.

Jimmy Connors won his second straight Bank of Oklahoma Tennis tournament by defeating Kevin Curren, 6-3, 6-2, in the rain-shortened final at Tulsa, Okla.

Connors, who earned $50,000, won the tournament for the fourth time. He also finished first in 1979, 1983 and 1985. Curren took home $25,000.

The final was delayed 1 1/2 hours when a thunderstorm moved through the area.
