Woo’s Father Appointed to State Development Post
A state known for its father-son political combos has another one: Wilbur Woo, father of Los Angeles City Councilman Michael Woo, was appointed Wednesday to the state Commission for Economic Development.
Unlike the governors Brown, or even the local duo of Supervisor Kenneth Hahn and his City Atty. son, James, the Woos share relatives but not political parties.
Michael Woo, who defeated incumbent Peggy Stevenson to gain his council seat last year, is a registered Democrat. Wilbur Woo, 70, a founder of the Chinatown-based Cathay Bank, is a Republican.
Their differing views have prompted an occasional political row, Michael Woo allowed.
“There’s also the theory that he had to be a good Republican in order for me to afford to be a Democrat,” he joked.
Republican Gov. George Deukmejian picked Wilbur Woo to replace Paula Meehan, who resigned. His term runs through Jan. 1, 1990.
