SPRING HIGHLIGHTS : Master’s Uses 20 Hits to Bury Caltech, 14-3

Matt MacArthur, Kurt Thielen, Tim Kane, Andre Richner and Sean Fielding combined for 15 hits and nine runs batted in to lead Master’s College to a 14-3 victory over Caltech on Wednesday.

Master’s batters collected 20 hits in the non-conference win.

Richner (1-0) and reliever Rod Shakelford--who added a double from the plate--combined to limit Caltech to five hits.

Master’s is 20-30-2 overall.

High School Baseball

Thousand Oaks 7, Westlake 0 (forfeit)--The Westlake bench was ejected in the third inning and the team was forced to play with no substitutes. Westlake fell behind 16-5 and had to forfeit in the bottom of the sixth inning when catcher Tom Dwyer was tossed out of the game by the home plate umpire.

Ed Hall went 3 for 3 with two homers and four RBIs for Thousand Oaks. Teammate Joe Sturges went 3 for 3 and scored three runs.

Simi Valley 7, Newbury Park 1--The Pioneers (20-3 overall, 9-0 in league) struck for six runs in the first inning to easily defeat the Panthers in a Marmonte League game.

Senior right-hander Todd Sullivan (7-2) pitched his third complete game of the season, striking out eight and walking none. Dave Milstien and Corey Aurand both went 3 for 4 with two RBIs to lead Simi Valley’s offense.

Royal 5, Channel Islands 4--Joe Summers (3 for 4, five RBIs) slammed a game-winning, three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning for the Highlanders.

Royal pitcher Chris Davis (2-0), who was 4 for 4 and scored three runs, relieved starter Dan Presta in the fourth inning and gave up three hits. Jeff Lopez socked a solo homer for Channel Islands in the bottom of the seventh.

Montclair Prep 6, Marshall Fundamental 4--Pinch-hitter Scott Hauser capped a six-run sixth inning by doubling home the winning runs in the Alpha League game at Valley College. John Quick and Curtis Minks added two hits each for Montclair (17-3 overall, 10-1 in league).

High School Softball

Montclair Prep 19, Marshall Fundamental 9--Shauna Whitmore went 2 for 4 and had six RBIs for Montclair Prep. Whitmore’s bases-loaded double highlighted an 11-run fourth inning. Christy Gilpin went 2 for 4 with four RBIs for Montclair Prep.

Chaminade 6, St. Genevieve 2--Dawn McCarthy had three hits and scored a run as Chaminade clinched a playoff berth with the victory. Sophomore Suzette Honore (2-0), who pitched her first game of the season earlier in the week, threw a four-hitter. She struck out three and walked four.

Alemany 14, Corvallis 0--Jennifer Kroll was 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs to lead lead Alemany (17-2 overall) to its 12th straight San Fernando Valley League win.

Freshman Rebecca Stuart upped her record to 3-0 with a 10-strikeout performance.

Louisville 15, Notre Dame 3--Becky Long’s grand slam in the top of the first inning led Louisville to the easy victory. The sophomore was 2 for 4 with five RBIs on the day.

Teammate Dianna Hetman also had a big game with a 3 for 3 performance at the plate.

High School Volleyball

Kennedy def. Birmingham (15-5, 15-3, 15-5)--Middle blocker Josh Klapow had 14 blocks to lead the Golden Cougars to victory in a West Valley League match at Kennedy. Teammate Keith Peterson, an outside hitter, contributed seven kills.

Kennedy (7-3) finished in a tie for second with Taft in the league and will compete in Tuesday’s opening round of the city playoffs.

Granada Hills def. Canoga Park (15-6, 15-11, 15-1)--John Lim and Brian Saltzman had seven kills each to lead Granada Hills (14-0 overall, 10-0 in league) to the Mid-Valley League victory.

Canoga Park dropped to 8-2 in league.
