UCI Third After First Day of PCAA Meet

UC Irvine finished the first day of the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. men’s and women’s track championships Friday at Fresno’s Warmerdam field with two PCAA meet records and four first places.

In the men’s meet, Anteater Robert Sibley won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 8:54.73, and Gus Quinonez took the 10,000 meters with a time of 30:36.867.

Irvine enters today’s competition in third place with 25 points, trailing second-place San Jose State and first-place Fresno State. The Bulldogs took the first four places in the pole vault and the triple jump and compiled a total of 84 points. Fresno’s Doug Fraley vaulted 18 feet, 6 1/2 inches to set a meet record.

San Jose State has 30 points.

The Bulldogs are also leading the women’s meet with 30 points, but are just a point ahead of San Diego State. The Anteaters are in third with 19.

UCI’s Karin Grelsson and San Diego State’s Maureen Bradley set meet records, Grelsson in the triple jump with her mark of 40 feet, 4 inches and Bradley in the 10,000 meters with a 36:46.44 finish.

The meet concludes today. Competition starts at 12:30 p.m.
