Mario Andretti suffered bruised knees and a cut to the inside of his left heel today in a crash during practice for the May 25 Indianapolis 500.

The 46-year-old driver was taken to Methodist Hospital for X-rays and further observation. Witnesses said something appeared to let go on the right rear of the car, sending Andretti’s Lola spinning into the third-turn wall. The nose of the car was sheared away, and the right front suspension was left dangling. Andretti, the 1969 winner of the 500, was able to get out of the car before safety crewmen arrived at the scene.
