Strong Aftershock Damages School in Aleutian Islands
The strongest aftershock yet of the powerful Aleutians Islands earthquake that triggered a Pacific-wide sea wave scare last week set off more tremors Thursday and damaged a village school.
The Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer said the temblor, which measured 6.5 on the Richter scale, lasted about 30 seconds Wednesday night. It was followed by other aftershocks Thursday morning.
The tremors shook ceiling panels loose, cracked walls and knocked books off shelves at the school in the island village of Atka, officials said. No injuries were reported.
