HAMPSTEAD, N.C. — A forest fire that burned 73,000 acres of woodland in the southeastern part of the state was declared contained Friday, but officials said they were not “walking away” from the blaze.
Firefighters will remain on the scene doing “mop-up” work on the fire for the next several weeks, said Rebecca Richards of the Natural Resources and Community Development Department.
The cause of the fire, which started May 5, is still under investigation, but arson is suspected.
