Jimmy Key pitched a one-hitter, and Ernie Whitt hit a grand slam as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Chicago White Sox, 5-0, at Chicago Thursday night, snapping the White Sox’s seven-game winning streak.

Key, who walked three, hit a batter and struck out eight, pitched the first one-hitter by Toronto since Luis Leal and Roy Lee Jackson combined on one against Cleveland on May 14, 1983.

Key, whose earned-run average fell from 8.33 to 7.01, won his third consecutive start. It was his first major league shutout.

Ozzie Guillen’s fifth-inning infield single was the only hit off Key, whose previous best was a four-hitter against the White Sox on May 20, 1985. Key’s late arrival covering first ended any chance of retiring Guillen.

Whitt’s grand slam was the second of his career. Whitt was the goat of Chicago’s 5-4 loss Wednesday night, committing a throwing error and later a passed ball.

Thursday night, he hit the slam, his fourth homer of the season, on a 3-and-2 count with one out in the fourth inning. The Blue Jays had loaded the bases against Rich Dotson (2-4) on two walks and a single by Jesse Barfield.

Kansas City 5, Texas 4--Jorge Orta knocked in three runs with a solo homer and a two-run double, and Frank White also homered as the Royals won at Arlington, Tex.

Danny Jackson (2-0) took a two-hit shutout and a 4-0 lead into the seventh, but the Rangers got consecutive singles by Pete O’Brien, Pete Incaviglia, Tom Paciorek, Toby Harrah and Steve Buechele to cut the margin to 4-3.

Reliever Dan Quisenberry came on to stop the rally, retiring Gary Ward on a liner to shortstop with two outs and the bases loaded.

Willie Wilson gave the Royals a 5-3 lead with an RBI single in the ninth before Ward hit a run-scoring single. Bud Black relieved Quisenberry and got the last out for his second save.

Loser Charlie Hough (2-2) allowed nine hits.

New York 4, Oakland 3--Dan Pasqua led off the ninth with his second home run of the game and third in two games to tie the score, and then Mike Pagliarulo hit a 400-foot single over a drawn-in outfield in the 11th to give the Yankees the victory at New York.

With one out in the 11th, Dave Winfield, who homered in the fourth inning, grounded a hit between third and short and stretched it into a double.

Oakland relief ace Jay Howell (0-3) issued an intentional walk to Mike Easler but also walked Butch Wynegar to load the bases. Pagliarulo then hit a drive over the head of center fielder Stan Javier for the winning run.

Cleveland 5, Milwaukee 4--Brett Butler hit a fly to right field that was misjudged by the Brewers’ Rob Deer for a three-run triple to cap a four-run sixth inning and give the Indians a 5-4 victory at Milwaukee.

Before the game, Cleveland reserve infielder Dan Rohn suffered a broken nose when hit by a bad-hop grounder during batting practice. He was taken to a Milwaukee hospital, where he stayed overnight for observation.
