Tennis Roundup : Stanford’s Goldie, SMU’s Reneberg Gain NCAA Final

Dan Goldie of Stanford and Richey Reneberg of Southern Methodist won semifinal matches at Athens, Ga., Saturday to advance to today’s singles final in the NCAA men’s tennis individual championships.

Goldie, at No. 3 the highest seeded player to survive the quarterfinals, defeated No. 5 Brad Pearce of UCLA, 6-2, 7-6.

Reneberg, seeded No. 6, defeated Joey Blake of Arkansas, 6-4, 6-3.

Reneberg was SMU’s No. 2 singles player this season. The last No. 2 player to win the individual title was UCLA’s Jimmy Connors in 1971.

SMU has never had a singles champion.

In today’s doubles final, the top-seeded team of Rick Leach and Tim Pawsat of USC will meet Michael Kures and Dan Nahirny of UCLA.

Saturday, Leach and Pawsat defeated Richard Schmidt and Tim Siegel of Arkansas, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, and Kures and Nahirny defeated Alabama’s Gregg Hahn and Clinton Ferriera, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.

In a $100,000 women’s tournament at Lugano, Switzerland, No. 14-seeded Rafaella Reggi of Italy upset No. 6-seeded Bettina Bunge, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6, to advance to the final against No. 1-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria.

Maleeva breezed past Sabrina Goles of Yugoslavia, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals after defeating Angeliki Kanellopoulou of Greece, 7-5, 6-1, in a quarterfinal match that was delayed one day by rain.

Sweden’s Henrik Sundstrom upset Spain’s Emilio Sanchez, 7-5, 7-6, to reach the final of a $100,000 Grand Prix tournament at Florence, Italy.

Sundstrom will face Ecuador’s Andres Gomez, the tournament’s top-seeded player who defeated 19-year-old Claudio Mazzardi of Italy, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, in his semifinal match.

At Dusseldorf, West Germany, Czechoslovakia lost to Australia, 2-1, putting top-seeded Sweden into the $500,000 Ambre Solaire World Cup finals. Earlier, the Swedes had swept Switzerland, 3-0, but the Czechs had to lose in order for Sweden to qualify for today’s finals against France.
