The first memorial to Vietnam veterans on an active military base was dedicated at the Presidio in San Francisco. Called a “living memorial” because of a semicircle of Italian cypresses that backdrop its plaque and 5-foot granite cenotaph, the monument stands near the post chapel, and was formally dedicated by Col. Jerry Autry, the Presidio Post Chaplain, who was a prime mover in the effort to establish it on the base. Autry, 46, holds a Silver Star, Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts and other decorations for Vietnam service with the 101st Airborne Division.
