The sign on the front door of the Santa Ana house read, “You Loot, I Shoot.” Outside the house last week, someone did.
A man who police believe was stealing fighting roosters from the backyard was shot twice and died a short time later at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital.
Salvador S. Tinajero, 37, was struck in the chest and leg when he was shot about 1:25 a.m. Tuesday outside the house on West 5th Street, and died at 2:01 a.m.
Although police reported Tinajero was shot after he took two roosters, valued at about $150 each, the slain man’s family denied he stole the birds. Tinajero had raised roosters until city animal control officers ordered a stop to the practice about a year ago, a family member said.
Cockfighting is illegal.
Seven men who live at the house were detained for questioning, but they were later released.
The house had been burglarized a month ago, a resident said.
