A freight train struck and killed an unidentified man Thursday night in Sylmar, police said.

Los Angeles Police Department officers said the man was killed about 9 p.m. on the Southern Pacific railroad tracks about 500 feet north of Hubbard Street near Truman Street, just outside the San Fernando city limits.

The engines pulling the southbound train were able to stop about a mile down the tracks from where the man was hit, but the freight cars of the long train stretched back almost to the spot where he was struck, police said.
