Solis to Ride Mazaad in Cinema ‘Cap
Mazaad, winner of the Spotlight and the Will Rogers turf races for 3-year-olds, will go for the third victory in the series today at Hollywood Park. But this time, jockey Bill Shoemaker will not be aboard, since he will be in New York, riding Ferdinand in the Belmont Stakes. Instead, Alex Solis will have the mount on Mazaad in the Cinema Handicap.
Mazaad, owned by Sheik Mohammed al Maktoum and trained by Charlie Whittingham, had won three of his five starts in England before coming to the United States.
Autobot, which finished right behind Mazaad in both races, will try again today in the $100,000 race.
Sunday at Hollywood, in the Gamely Stakes, Estrapade will attempt to repeat last year’s victory. Although a big winner in 1985--she won the Yellow Ribbon Invitational, the Las Palmas Handicap and the Santa Anita Handicap--Estrapade has yet to run to form this year, having finished second in the Santa Barbara and third in the Wilshire.
Estrapade, often called the best mare on turf, will be challenged by La Koumia.
