Gary Abraham, a former player at Moorpark College, has been hired to coach the women’s basketball team at the school. Abraham succeeds Anthony Smith, who resigned at the end of last season. Abraham, from Newbury Park High, played at Moorpark from 1979 to 1981 seasons before moving on to Chapman College and Cal Lutheran. He served as an assistant coach with Moorpark’s men team before accepting the women’s job this week.
Melissa Jordan of Camarillo will attempt to make the U.S. World Judo team in a meet this weekend in Colorado. Jordan, an 18-year-old UCLA student who won the women’s Junior Olympic Judo championship last weekend in Colorado Springs, is trying to accumulate enough points to earn a berth on the U.S. team that will go to Seoul, Korea, for the Summer Olympics in 1988.
Walter Sims of North Hollywood (17-3-1), the No. 3-ranked lightweight boxer in California, will meet Mexico’s Martin Morado in a 10-round bout June 17 at Reseda’s Country Club. Other fights on the card include Otis Pimpleton of North Hollywood and Rodney Starks in a six-round junior middleweight bout and Tony Chicoine and Henry Johnson in a six-round middleweight match. Tickets start at $20. Fights begin at 8:15 p.m.
