A 62-year-old Sun Valley woman trying to cross a street in Pacoima was killed Saturday evening when she was hit by a car driven by a man who was later booked for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, Los Angeles police reported.

The woman, Selma Reeves, was pronounced dead by paramedics at 6:15 p.m. in the 13100 block of Terra Bella Street, Officer Charles Markel said.

Moments earlier, Reeves and her husband had tried to cross Terra Bella in the middle of the block, where there are no crosswalks, Markel said.

An eastbound car driven by Robert Earl Taylor, 28, of Pacoima, hit Reeves, throwing her about 35 feet, Markel said. The officer said Reeves’ husband had seen the oncoming car and had tried to pull her out of the street.

Taylor was held on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol at Van Nuys Jail in lieu of $2,500 bail, Markel said.
