A 33-year-old man was in serious condition after being stabbed several times with a kitchen knife during a quarrel with his roommate early Sunday, police said.

Jose M. Jorden of Costa Mesa remained hospitalized at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital while his roommate, Abelvardo Mattallan, 34, was being held in lieu of $250,000 bail at the city jail on suspicion of attempted murder. Mattallan was arrested shortly after 10 a.m. after an officer spotted his car near Harbor Boulevard and Date Place, Police Sgt. George Yezbick said.

Police said they responded to a call about 2:30 a.m. to the 2800 block of South Bristol Street, where officers found the victim outside an apartment complex, stabbed several times in the stomach and chest.
