Forkintheroad, an 11-1 longshot ridden by New York jockey Jerry Bailey, held off Aggies Best at the wire to win the $100,000 Chaucer Cup at Canterbury Downs in Shakopee, Minn.
Forkintheroad, a 4-year-old brown gelding trained by Jack Van Berg, was supposed to have been ridden by Mike Smith, Canterbury’s winningest jockey in 1985. Smith was taken off the horse when Bailey became available after Charging Falls was scratched.
