NEW YORK — A. Bartlett Giamatti, retiring president of Yale University who once said the only thing he ever wanted to be president of was the American League, was named today as president of the National League.
Giamatti, 48, a Renaissance scholar, succeeds Chub Feeney, who is retiring after 17 years on the job. Giamatti, an avid Boston Red Sox fan, has no experience in baseball. However, he was considered a candidate for commissioner two years ago before the owners selected Peter Ueberroth.
