Walter Murray, a second-round draft pick of the Washington Redskins charged with trying to bribe a police officer in Honolulu, testified that he was only joking when he offered the policeman two college football tickets during a traffic dispute.

“Maybe I should have told him a better joke, or nothing at all,” Murray testified during his trial.

Kyle Nobriga had stopped a moped carrying Murray, then at the University of Hawaii, and sophomore Tammyra Powers, 20, last October. Murray said he mentioned the two tickets when Nobriga indicated that he might confiscate the moped because Powers wasn’t carrying her ownership papers.
